The VW Golf and the Skoda Octavia are both built on the MQB platform and are of similar size. So the option really has been hatchback or estate against liftback or estate.

The new Golf is said to be smaller than the existing car while the new Octavia is said to be bigger than the existing car .

So smaller Golf.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

or bigger (and likely cheaper) Octavia?

I think Skoda are really knocking it out the park with the new cars, the Scala, Octavia and Superb.

It’s like they designed two Superbs, couldn’t decide which to keep and then said, ‘right, we’ll call one of them an Octavia, the other will be the Superb.

Skoda, their designs look like a cross between Audi and Kia and that's a good thing to me.

Isn’t the Leon b ased on the same platform as well? I think I would do that.

I like that the majority of the Skoda range have similarities, but aren’t all ‘samey’ like Audi. The Skoda headlights all have a slight difference to them to stand out. Where few Kias look like they are from the same brand. So it’s a g ood mix.

The Leon is a great car. They just aren’t doing anything with it.

While the Golf is getting smaller, the Octavia is getting bigger, the Scala (the replacement to the Rapid Spaceback) is going into the current Octavia segment to go a gainst the Golf, Leon , Focus, etc...

The Focus having had a significant refresh and larger spec range.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

So for the Leon not to be doing anything, is a let down.

Autocar say the new Golf is bigger than the previous one in their first dr ive review “The new Golf is 29mm longer, 10mm wider and 4mm taller than before, with the same wheelbase.”

Aso new Leon is meant to be a looker so that.

Superb Scout.

I n my dreams a vRS estate.

I'd be satisfied with a basae hatchback DSG though...

The new Golf is definitely slightly larger than the old one going by VW’s official dimensions. I don’t know where AutoExpress got the idea that it’s shrunk. It’s still quite a bit smaller than the Octavia though.

If we’re talking hatches I’d take the new Golf, since I prefer a hatch that is obviously a hatch. Not the biggest fan of the faux sedan/saloon look. But when it comes to wagons/estates, I’d take the Octavia for the extra cargo space.

Ye’, curious about the size thing.

I’d still go for the Octavia for looks, size, price, interior space, etc...

I’ve don't see the liftbacks as faux saloons, just a beautiful middle ground.

Kodiaq looks like an atlas or a tiguan. I had a rental tigger. Wasn't bad or good really.

I was curious too, and have nothing better to do so I took a closer look...according to VW media the Mk8 is 4287mm long, 1789mm wide, and 1456mm tall compared to 4255mm x 1799mm x 1452mm for the Mk7. So it’s slightly longer, very very slightly taller and (oddly) slightly narrower.

Oddly the wheelbase as listed is 1mm less than the Mk7's, which is such a small difference I wonder whether there’s an actual difference in reality. The Octavia has the same wheelbase as the old model. I think they’re both effectively reskins of the previous generations.

The Kodia is bigger than the Tiguan, I think bigger than the Tiguan LWB.

I think Skoda’s Karoq is the direct competition.

Kinja'd!!!

and the Kamiq is down from that.

Kinja'd!!!

The curious thing about the Kodiaq is they’ve release a Scout version.

The Scout versions are limited versions of the regular car, which makes sense for the Octavia and the Superb.

A lifted SUV?
